There are many cleaners on the internet forums, so knowing where to go for this information is a daunting task. There are many important factors that are contributing to a good vacuum cleaner forum, the most important, as up to date is the forum where the information is trustworthy and will answer your contributions in a timely manner.

A good vacuum cleaner forum contains information on current models of vacuum cleaners. Many forums for information on a vacuum cleaner with a name, but many manufacturers keep the vacuum the same name, although the model number has changed.

There are two ways to extrapolate information from a vacuum forum, read and search the information that is already there, or posting questions and get an answer. If you ask a question on one of these forums is not for what you enjoy answering party state with vacuum cleaners and previous experience in applying technical questions. If you are a good sealed HEPA filtration vacuum I can find the HEPA Filtration Upright Vacuum Cleaner Model SC5845 recommend

What is a self-propelled vacuum cleaner?
Self-propelled vacuum cleaners are necessary for the vacuum-sensei. Handheld vacuum cleaner with a self-propelled drive equipped to help users push the vacuum is so much easier to move on to your carpet. Just be aware that self-propelled vacuum cleaner slightly higher maintenance costs contribute

How many amps should have my vacuum cleaner?
This is one of those "no right or wrong" answers. Some vacuum cleaners had better use their power with efficient airflow design and well-made agitator brush, so I cannot set in stone number. Your sensei you can go a good rule of thumb, not with any upright or cylinder vacuum cleaner with less than 12 amps

Which Vacuum Brands you personally recommend?
I recommend brands because their vacuum lineup changes from year to year and there is usually a dud or two in a manufacturer's product line. I have no problem recommending special vacuum cleaner, but I'll never, never give a blanket endorsement of a company

What is the difference between types of vacuum cleaners?
What should I get there are three basic types of vacuum cleaners. Upright, canister and handheld

Vacuums Canister vacuum cleaners are generally characterized as eggs with hoses on them. They are for people with hard floors and vacuum heads are customizable so you can one with an agitator brush for cleaning carpets or without change when cleaning hard surfaces made of wood. They are also great for people with lots of stairs and ceiling cleaning. The biggest drawback for canister vacuum is portability.

Canister vacuum cleaners are not as mobile as their upright or hand-held counterparts are.

Upright vacuum Vacuums Uprights are the most popular model. People with large carpet areas they love, because they are a lot of ground in a small amount of time and cover them easy to move. They are terrible at cleaning hard surfaces and will probably hurt more than help, if you wanted to suck on your hard wood floors with an upright. HeldsI hand as hand held vacuum, because they are great for reaching small corners and cleaning cars. Portable vacuum cleaners are usually at the hands of people who spot clean as always. Buy a hand vacuum cleaner as a supplement for Upright and canister vacuum

How much does a good vacuum cleaner costs, you can get a great bargain vacuum cleaner for less than one hundred dollars?
Some of the better, more powerful home vacuum cleaners on the market are made by Miele. They usually run 0 to 0. But you can still get a great vacuum cleaner for less than one hundred dollars. Scroll view through my reviews and find, with features that you like, I'm sure you'll find much on a vacuum cleaner.

Samsung SC6591 Vacuum Cleaner

Model Number SC6591
Brand Samsung
Colour Sky Metal Blue
Power 2000W
Filtration Micro
Dustbag 1.4L
Warranty 2 Year

Price Range: $263 - $266 at 2 stores

Vacuum Cleaners Shopping Information

is a comparison online shopping service on the web. In the mid-1800s, the start of the company actually began with a small crockery shop situated in Grand Rapids, Michigan that was owned by Anna and Melville Bissell.

With piles of sawdust covering the shop and attacking the carpet, sweeping the tiny particles was near impossible. Anna voiced her opinion to Melville, who was quite handy and decided to design a carpet-sweeping machine that would make things much easier to manage in the shop.

Over the years, the Bissell name would evolve to include a range of other products. Throughout the 1950s, the Bissell multi-purpose formula and shampooer cut down on the time required for carpet cleaning.

The company also concentrated on providing the public with practical, lightweight products that could accommodate small living spaces. The Bissell vacuum cleaners have also gained quite a following.

Popular selections include the Bissell 7920 Upright, which possesses an on-board heater for tap water that other models do not furnish. With the Bissell 1950-G Deep, the reliable cross-action brush makes dirt removal much easier, as it works just as well as a full-size upright deep cleaner.

Those considering a Bissell BS5200F Flip-It has the convenience of wet or dry cleaning that safely deals with all sealed hard surfaces. Well, the ambitious designers at Dyson have released their latest, greatest, and, quite possibly, lightest -- the D24 -- and it's a significant improvement over past Dyson vacuums. This is the first time the innovative ball has been used in a Dyson model this light and compact. It's less than four feet tall and a foot wide, and weighs just under 12 pounds, which makes it easy to move and maneuver from room to room (or up a few flights of stairs).

Why it's different: Though generally rather awesome, past Dyson vacuum cleaners have suffered from being too heavy and bulky, with buttons hidden in very hard-to-reach (and unintuitive places). The new DC-24 is only 11.6 pounds -- much more powerful than a Dustbuster-style vac, yet far smaller and more maneuverable than a typical upright vacuum cleaner.

What we like: The DC24 uses Dyson's patented new Ball tech -- essentially, a big orange ball that serves as the rolling mechanism for the unit. It's rather revolutionary in terms of the mobility and turning radius: moving a vacuum around your floor has never been this fun. While traditional vacuum cleaners feel like they're stuck on invisible tracks, this one turns and pivots around any household with ease, effortlessly gliding across the floor. Like all Dyson vacs, the DC24 really does live up to the claims of controlled suction – it works on all surfaces with virtually the same suction power. We really noticed the difference when we moved from one surface to another –- the DC24 didn't struggle or even seem like it was adjusting. The canister is super easy to empty (though it fills up very fast, which probably says something about the cleanliness of our floors than anything else). The overall body is small and compact, so if you're not into displaying the well designed vacuum, you can easily store in small places.

What we don't like: The handheld wand -- while improved over previous Dyson iterations -- is still a bit of a struggle to use. The hose conveniently collapses back into its original form when you're not cleaning with it, but is just sorta painful to actually use -- it's not as flexible as we would have liked, and doesn't work symbiotically with the rest of the unit. This might be less of an issue if there was some sort of "lock mode" that prevented the vacuum from moving around, of if the wand were made of a more lightweight, flexible material.

What it costs: $399

Does it live up to the hype? Dyson's DC24 is an awesome vacuum cleaner. It makes cleaning your home something to look forward to (not even just for the anal-retentive among us), and improves significantly upon Dyson's already solid foundation. It's cheaper than other Dyson models by $100, but it's still comes in at a cool four bills -- a bit out of the average vacuum cleaner budget. But the thing comes with lifetime HEPA and washable filters (read: no bags to buy, ever), and a five-year warranty, looks great, feels great, and sucks real hard (in a good way). If you've got the cash, you won't be disappointed.

Dyson DC25 Vacuum Cleaner

Here’s another home related product review. Before I jump into it, however, let me tell you a story.

Several years ago, my mom wanted to get a new vacuum cleaner. Her current one had served her well for a number of years, but was nearing the end of its life. My dad, sister, and I decided to get her a Dyson Animal for Christmas (we got her one of the older models; the one linked to is a newer one). It was quite expensive (~$400 if I remember correctly), but we wanted to splurge and get my mom something nice, so we did. On Christmas eve, my mom vacuumed the living room with her old vacuum, and everyone went to bed. The next morning, we got up and opened our presents. After all of our packages were opened, my mom wanted to try out the new vacuum, and did so on the freshly vacuumed floor from the previous night. To our surprise, one pass of the Dyson over the carpet actually made it look cleaner. She continued to vacuum the whole room, and in the end, the canister was completely full of cat hair, dust, and dirt! Needless to say, we were sold on the Dyson line of vacuums.

The Dyson line has improved since those early days, and the new Dyson DC25 uses a ball to handle steering. After reading a bunch of reviews for it and its smaller brother (the DC24), I decided to go with the DC25. Every review I read was highly positive, so I broke down and bought one.

Just after I moved in, I had the carpets professionally dry-cleaned (the former owners had several pets). The guy did a great job, and the carpet looked much better once he was done. Remembering my mother’s experience with the Animal, however, I decided to give the carpets another cleaning with the DC25. I ended up emptying the canister twice! I was shocked at how much pet hair and dirt the professional cleaning left behind. Not only did my carpets look better at the house, the whole house smelled better! The ball really is amazing to use (a flick of the wrist is all that’s needed to steer the vacuum), and it’s much lighter than my mom’s older Animal. Setup was very easy: a total of 4 clicks was all that was needed to get things going. And cleanup is a cinch; one button allows you to disconnect the canister from the vacuum, while another allows you to dump the contents into the trash, all with one hand!

This vacuum has a few drawbacks, however. First of all, it’s very expensive, much more so than its competition. I personally think the cost is worth it, considering how well my experience with this line has been in the past. But it may be a little off-putting for most people. Second, the documentation that comes with the vacuum is sorely lacking. I was really disappointed with the poor quality, and was hoping for something a little more substantial. Next, the packaging ends up being a mountain of cardboard. It’s all recyclable, of course, but the amount of cardboard that came in the box was pretty crazy. Finally, the cord feels a little shorter than the one on my mom’s Animal. This isn’t a big problem, but a few extra feet would have been appreciated.

All in all, I’m quite happy with my purchase. I was pleasantly surprised at how much dirt and debris the vacuum picked up, and I’m glad I gave my house another once-over with it. If you’re willing to pay the high price, you won’t be disappointed with the Dyson DC25. It gets a solid A+ from me.

History of the vacuum cleaner 2

Many products designed to make life and work easier emerged from the (American) Industrial Revolution. Among them was the lowly vacuum cleaner.
Today, vacuum cleaners may be found in nearly every household and, indeed, are generally taken for granted. However, it was not all that long ago when homemakers had to clean their homes with brushes and cloths, which usually stirred up more dust than it cleaned. Many households observed the annual ritual of “spring cleaning:” The furniture was moved aside; then the carpets and rugs were taken outside and hung on the clothes line to be given a good beating. Various metal and wooden rug beaters were used for the unpleasant and exhausting task.

The first hand-pumped vacuum cleaner in the United States was the “Whirlwind,” a wood and canvas contraption which appeared at the hands of a Chicago inventer in 1865. Today, only two known examples of the Whirlwind are extant — one in the Hoover Historical Center in Canton, Ohio and the other in a private collection. Very little is known about the Whirlwind and most of the inventor’s inventory was lost in the Great Chicago Fire.

Thus, hand-pumped — or otherwise manually operated — vacuum cleaners have been around since the mid-1800s. Every imaginable variety was conceived of, from zoomorphic monsters to machines housed in exquisite cabinetry that could double as coffee tables, sidebars and cocktail bars! The method of operation of the model pictured below is quite evident, and apparently designed with family togetherness in mind as two people — husband and wife — worked together to operate this sweeper!

Note: All images in this gallery that have a thin border around them are “interactive” — click on the image to see a larger and higher-resolution version.

Special thanks to Tommie Jšnsson of Spray for permission to use this image, as well as the images found in the Electrolux Model V Exhibit.)

Who’s working the hardest, here?!

Another curious by-product of the Industrial Revolution was a new-found obsession with hygiene and cleanliness, helped along in no small part by scary advertising and medical establishment propaganda about the dire dangers of household filth. Almost overnight, disinfectants, household cleaners, and expensive cleaning apparatus appeared. Coincidentally, along with the appearance of the more sanitary indoor flushing toilet. And the vacuum cleaner certainly played a big part in this sanitary-bullying. Ads for vacuum cleaners showed such things as children playing in mounds of dirt, admonishing the homemakers that unless they were using the “Brand-X” vacuum sweeper, that was exactly what their children were doing — playing in filth and dirt and endangering their lives and health.

(This is not to say that hygiene and sanitation are not important! The point is that this obsession with disinfecting the household appeared suddenly around the turn of the century — a fairly recent phenomenon — and the new fetish for cleanliness was quickly hit on by manufacturers of household cleaning supplies and equipment.)

—ooOoo—

The first electric “suction sweeper” appeared in 1907.
(More about this electric machine can be found in the Hoover exhibit.) Apparently, several electricity-powered vaccum cleaners appeared at about the same time, just past the turn of the 20th century. Many of these early electric machines were simply earlier types of hand-pumped pneumatic machines to which electric motors were affixed to operate the leather bellows inside.

Most of the major vacuum cleaner manufacturers of today — Electrolux, Royal, Kirby, Eureka, Hoover, etc. — can be traced back to at least the early 1920s and in some cases even earlier than that.

(Please do note that all dates and details in this museum pertain to the American vacuum cleaner only unless noted otherwise. I am not as well-versed on the machines of other countries; however, as far as I have been able to research, the vaccum cleaner was originally an American invention and subsequently spread to other nations thereafter.)

You really don’t wanna know, but since you asked:
First, it’s about 75-80 percent dead human skin cells. We mortals slough off millions of skin cells daily and this shedded material makes up the disproportionate portion of “vacuum cleaner” dirt. The rest of it is hair, animal dander, dust mites (another whole scary thing to think about); and the smallest portions being pollen, dirt, sand and earth tracked or blown in from outdoors. Bet you thought it was the other way around...

Many door-to-door salesmen sold many beater-bar-type vacuum cleaners by a very simple, yet very disgusting demonstration: They would ask the nice “lady of the house” to pull back the bed covers and linens. The vacuum cleaner would be used on the bare mattress. The salesman would open the dirt bag and dump a small mound of greyish-white powder onto the mattress with the somber announcement that the blissful couple had been sleeping — and, er, well, you know ... doing other stuff — atop all that dead skin. Many a vacuum cleaner was sold on the spot!

And speaking of sneaky vacuum cleaner salesman tricks (and there were many), here's a classic gimmick that many people [still] fall for: The salesman, ever concerned for the good health and sound hygiene of his prospective customers, would ask the housewife to carefully vacuum a portion of her carpet with her old [and he would emphasize the word “old”] vacuum cleaner.

He would then make a sly comment along the lines of, “I’ll bet you think your carpet is clean now, Mrs. Jones, don’t you. After all, you just used YOUR vacuum cleaner on it.” Of course she would agree, not wanting to concede the possibility that her present sweeper was inferior.

Then he would grandly shove her old cleaner aside and set-to vacuuming the same spot with his sparkling new cleaner. He’d open the dirt-bag and dump the contents onto the rug — that she had just cleaned — commenting about how much dirt her old vacuum had left behind.

This is a terrific sales technique; and one that sold many a new cleaner! Only thing is, the same process would also work in reverse: If the salesman vacuumed first with the machine he was demonstrating, and the housewife then used hers afterward, she, too, would find dirt in her machine. It’s the simple physics of the fact that one pass of vacuuming will not remove all the dirt from a carpet, no matter how carefully the chore is carried out. Some dirt will always remain behind!

These are from 1950s sales training manuals. Both illustrations accompany testimonials as to how many “Brand-X” machines had been sold that month --- to households that already had new cleaners!

Dyson Vacuum Cleaner

The world of vacuum cleaners was in a bit of a rut till Dyson vacuum cleaners came along and that's the honest truth!and every field there is always an innovator who has the imagination and the desire to make changes for the better. In the vacuum cleaner world that man was James Dyson and the end result was the Dyson vacuum cleaner.

Every traditional vacuum cleaner operated on the same design principle. It was based on an electric motor that produced suction, which sucked up dust and dirt, all of which was gathered in an internal dust bag.

Or at least most of it. These traditional vacuum cleaners operated all along the same principle apart from variations in color or design. That was all that there was to it. People knew no better and probably didn’t give the subject of vacuum cleaners too much thought. James Dyson could be described as a man with a curious mind, and when he turned his attention to vacuum cleaners, he set up a revolution that has changed the way these important machines operate radically.

Nowadays the Dyson Vacuum Cleaner has taken a very considerable share of the domestic vacuum cleaners market. Not just because it looks good, but also because it does a remarkable cleaning job. To understand what may make Dyson vacuum cleaners better than their competitors in the vacuum cleaner world is to understand that Dyson’s invention could only be better by virtue of their design.

Instead of generating their suction power through an electric motor, Dyson’s vacuums used their motor to produce and enhance suction power through the utilization of a centrifugal force at very high speeds. The Dyson vacuum cleaner invention was based around doing away with the internal dust bag, which detracted from the power suction that vacuum cleaners generated. This is what Dyson discovered and he did so as an inventor who had no designs to manufacture.

When James Dyson took his ideas to the major companies in vacuum cleaner manufacturing, they were reluctant to change their proven formulas. Never a man to shirk a challenge, Dyson formed his own manufacturing company that has gone on to take a justifiably large share of the market, due to the versatility, strength of their models the Dyson vacuum cleaners and the constant innovations that they constantly introduce.

How Vacuum Cleaner Works

When you sip soda through a straw, you are utilizing the simplest of all suction mechanisms. Sucking the soda up causes a pressure drop between the bottom of the straw and the top of the straw. With greater fluid pressure at the bottom than the top, the soda is pushed up to your mouth.

This is the same basic mechanism at work in a vacuum cleaner, though the execution is a bit more complicated. In this article, we'll look inside a vacuum cleaner to find out how it puts suction to work when cleaning up the dust and debris in your house. As we'll see, the standard vacuum cleaner design is exceedingly simple, but it relies on a host of physical principles to clean effectively.

Vacuum Cleaner Image Gallery

In its 100-year history, the electric vacuum cleaner has become an indispensable home appliance for most people, and it's obvious why. Imagine picking all this sawdust out of the carpet by hand!

It may look like a complicated machine, but the conventional vacuum cleaner is actually made up of only six essential components:

An intake port, which may include a variety of cleaning accessories

An exhaust port

An electric motor

A fan

A porous bag

A housing that contains all the other components

When you plug the vacuum cleaner in and turn it on, this is what happens:

The electric current operates the motor. The motor is attached to the fan, which has angled blades (like an airplane propeller).

As the fan blades turn, they force air forward, toward the exhaust port (check out How Airplanes Work to find out what causes this).

When air particles are driven forward, the density of particles (and therefore the air pressure) increases in front of the fan and decreases behind the fan.

This pressure drop behind the fan is just like the pressure drop in the straw when you sip from your drink. The pressure level in the area behind the fan drops below the pressure level outside the vacuum cleaner (the ambient air pressure). This creates suction, a partial vacuum, inside the vacuum cleaner. The ambient air pushes itself into the vacuum cleaner through the intake port because the air pressure inside the vacuum cleaner is lower than the pressure outside.
As long as the fan is running and the passageway through the vacuum cleaner remains open, there is a constant stream of air moving through the intake port and out the exhaust port. But how does a flowing stream of air collect the dirt and debris from your carpet? The key principle is friction.

The origin of the vacuum cleaner

The paper entitled "The origin of the vacuum cleaner" by H Cecil Booth, is published in the Transactions of the Newcomen Society, 1934-35 Vol 15.

The inventor's friends had been "urging him for about a quarter of a century" to set down the history of the vacuum cleaner in writing. As the author of the original patent he was well qualified to present these experiences to the Newcomen Society. In this paper he describes how he came to design the first cleaner, evaluates the various previous patents, relates his litigation experiences and discusses the technology's adoption in the early 20th century - long before it was ever called a 'hoover'!

"My attention was first directed to the mechanical removal of dust from carpets in 1901 through a demonstration of an American machine by its inventor at the Empire Music Hall, where I attended by invitation of a friend. The machine consisted of a box about a foot square having a bag on the top and to which compressed air at 90lb pressure was supplied; the air was blown down into the carpet from two opposing directions while the box was pushed over the carpet, and the inventor trusted to the reflection from the surface underneath the carpet to drive the dust and air up into the box. I remarked that I could not see how one could get the dust out effectively in this way as much must be blown out sideways; further, a cushion or seat where there was no back to reflect the air could not be cleaned. I asked the inventor why he did not suck out the dust for he seemed to be going round three sides of a house to get across the front. The inventor became heated, remarked that sucking out dust was impossible and that it had been tried over and over again without success; he then walked away.

I thought over the matter for a few days and tried the experiment of sucking with my mouth against the back of a plush seat in a restaurant in Victoria Street with the result that I was almost choked. I came to the conclusion that I could construct a machine to work by suction. A friend offered to finance experiments and I went ahead...

A company called the Vacuum Cleaner Company Limited, later named the British Vacuum Cleaner & Engineering Company Limited, was formed to exploit the patent, the foreign rights were sold to nearly all the European countries and America, and the use of the vacuum cleaner spread with considerable rapidity. Almost the first work which the original machine did was to clean the great blue coronation carpet under the Throne at Westminster Abbey prior to the coronation of his late Majesty King Edward VII, and by his command it was used to give a demonstration to him and the late Queen Alexandra at Buckingham Palace on 23rd October 1902. Later it was demonstrated to President Fallières at the Elysée Palace, Paris and afterwards to the Emperor William II and the late Tzar Nicholas II at Darmstadt. You will be interested to hear perhaps that the late Sultan Abdul Hamid of Turkey shortly after this bought a similar machine for his own use in Constantinople...

I have been asked about the quantity of dust removed - this was really astonishing - eg two machines took half a ton of dust out of the carpets of one of the large shops in the West End in one night. During the war there was a serious outbreak of spotted fever amongst the men of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve at Crystal Palace and there were a number of deaths there. An officer from the Admiralty visited me and said that it was desired to clean out the Crystal Palace and that they wanted a vacuum cleaner: "one of those things that you stick on to the electric light fittings". I replied that I would send down a fleet of machines that afternoon if I were given the order. About 15 high power machines were actually sent, and within 3 or 4 weeks the dust, which had been inches deep on the girders, was removed, to the amount of 26 tons, and buried. I understood that the health of the men at once improved...

The question may, I think, reasonably be asked, and was indeed asked and fought out in no uncertain manner by the leaders of the English bar, as to whether the machine which I had made and patented in 1901 could truly be called an invention...my own patent protection was always upheld in repeated attacks through all the courts, including the House of Lords. Altogether, twenty-three judges expressed their opinions on this matter, nineteen being in my favour and four against in minority judgements.

This machine did much to familiarise people with such a method of cleaning... There were, however, many difficulties which had to be met with and overcome, for instance, in the early days of 1901 to 1903 it was assumed by the police authorities that the machine had no right to work on a public thoroughfare. Many summonses per month were issued... Furthermore the Vacuum Company was frequently sued for damages for allegedly frightening cab horses in the street...

As the automobile industry improved, the form of cleaner for house to house work had its pump and dust collector mounted in a automobile van, the suction hose being led away as before from the machine into the house... For fixed or central installations in larger buildings, the general form has remained unchanged with the exception that frequently the modern multi-stage turbine fan giving high vacuum and volume is substituted for the pump, and of course improvements in details have from time to time been made. To the best of my recollection the first central installation was made in the premises of Messrs Dickins and Jones of Regent Street, London, and soon after that one was installed in the House of Commons. Theatres, hotels and railway companies also rapidly adopted this system of cleaning."

In the ensuing discussion, two particularly interesting points were raised:

Mr J Foster Pertree wondered whether Sir Charles Parsons might possibly have experimented with vacuum cleaners for his turbines. The inventor was not sure, though he did know that his vacuum cleaners had been applied to cleansing turbine blading in destroyers and submarines, and central plants had been used to deal with TNT dust.

Rex Wailes quoted the description of vacuum cleaning by Arnold Bennett in his novel of 1923, "Riceyman Steps".

History of the vacuum cleaner 2 (After World War 2)

For many years after their introduction, vacuum cleaners remained a luxury item; but after World War II they became common among the middle classes. They tend to be more common in Western countries because, in most parts of the world, wall-to-wall carpeting is uncommon and homes have tile or hardwood floors, which are easily swept, wiped, or mopped.
A Dyson DC07 upright Cyclonic vacuum cleaner using centrifugal force to separate dust and particles from the air flowing through the cylindrical collection vessel.

Vacuum cleaners working on the cyclone principle became popular in the 1990s, although some companies (notably Filter Queen and Regina) have been making vacuum cleaners with cyclonic action since 1928. In 1959 Amway patented the first 'bagless' cyclonic vacuum, called the CMS 1000. Modern cyclonic cleaners were adapted from industrial cyclonic separators by British designer James Dyson in 1985. He launched his cyclone cleaner first in Japan in the 1980s at a cost of about US$1,800 and later the Dyson DC01 upright in the UK in 1993 for £200. It was expected that people would not buy a vacuum cleaner at twice the price of a normal cleaner, but it later became the most popular cleaner in the UK.

Cyclonic cleaners do not use bags: instead, the dust collects in a detachable, cylindrical collection vessel. Air and dust are blown at high speed into the collection vessel at a direction tangential to the vessel wall, creating a vortex. The dust particles and other debris move to the outside of the vessel by centrifugal force, where they fall because of gravity, and clean air from the center of the vortex is expelled from the machine after passing through a number of successively finer filters at the top of the container. The first filter is intended to trap particles which could damage the subsequent filters that remove fine dust particles. The filters must regularly be cleaned or replaced to ensure that the machine continues to perform efficiently. Since Dyson, several other companies have introduced cyclone models, including Hoover, and the cheapest models are no more expensive than a conventional cleaner.

In early 2000 several companies developed robotic "vacuum" cleaners. Some examples are Roomba, Robomaxx, Trilobite and FloorBot. These machines propel themselves in patterns across a floor, cleaning surface dust and debris into their dustbin. They usually can navigate around furniture and find their recharging stations. Most robotic "vacuum" cleaners are designed for home use, although there are more capable models for operation in offices, hotels, hospitals, etc. Some such as the Roomba are equipped with an impeller motor to create an actual vacuum. By the end of 2003 about 570,000 units were sold worldwide.

In 2004 a British company released Airider, a hovering vacuum cleaner that floats on a cushion of air. It is claimed to be light weight and easier to maneuver (compared to using wheels), although it is not the first vacuum cleaner to do this - the Hoover Constellation predated it by at least 35 years.

There is a recorded example of a 1930s Electrolux vacuum cleaner surviving in use for over 70 years, finally breaking in 2008

History of the vacuum cleaner

Ives W. McGaffey. The machine was lightweight and compact, but was difficult to operate because of the need to turn a hand crank at the same time as pushing it across the floor. McGaffey obtained a patent for his device on June 5, 1869, and enlisted the help of The American Carpet Cleaning Co. of Boston to market it to the public. It was sold for $25, a high price in those days. It is hard to determine how successful the Whirlwind was, as most of them were sold in Chicago and Boston, and it is likely that many were lost in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Only two are known to have survived, one of which can be found in the Hoover Historical Center.

McGaffey was but one of many 19th-century inventors in the United States and Europe who devised manual vacuum cleaners. The first patent for an electrically driven "carpet sweeper and dust gatherer" was granted to Corinne Dufour of Savannah, Georgia in December 1900.
Melville Bissell

In 1876, Melville Bissell of Grand Rapids, Michigan created a vacuum cleaner for his wife, Anna to clean up sawdust in carpeting. Shortly after, Bissell Carpet Sweepers were born. After Melville died unexpectedly in 1889, Anna took control of the company and was one of the most powerful businesswomen of the day.
H. Cecil Booth

The first powered cleaner employing a vacuum was patented and produced by Hubert Cecil Booth in 1901. He noticed a device used in trains that blew dust off the chairs, and thought it would be much more useful to have one that sucked dust. He tested the idea by laying a handkerchief on the seat of a dinner chair, putting his mouth to the handkerchief, and then trying to suck up as much dust as he could onto the handkerchief. Upon seeing the dust and dirt collected on the underside of the handkerchief he realized the idea could work. Booth created a large device, known as Puffing Billy, driven first by an oil engine, and later by an electric motor. It was drawn by horses and parked outside the building to be cleaned.

Booth started the British Vacuum Cleaner Company and refined his invention over the next several decades. Though his "Goblin" model lost out to competition from Hoover in the household vacuum market, his company successfully turned its focus to the industrial market, building ever-larger models for factories and warehouses. Booth's company lives on today as a unit of pneumatic tube system maker Quirepace Ltd.

Nilfisk

In 1910 P.A. Fisker patented a vacuum cleaner using a name based on the company’s telegram address — Nilfisk. It was the first electric vacuum cleaner in Europe. His design weighed just 17.5 kg and could be operated by a single person. The company Fisker and Nielsen was formed just a few years before. Today the Nilfisk vacuums are delivered by Nilfisk-Advance.

Walter Griffiths

In 1905 "Griffith's Improved Vacuum Apparatus for Removing Dust from Carpets" was another manually operated cleaner, patented by Walter Griffiths Manufacturer, Birmingham, England. It was portable, easy to store, and powered by "any one person (such as the ordinary domestic servant)", who would have the task of compressing a bellows-like contraption to suck up dust through a removable, flexible pipe, to which a variety of shaped nozzles could be attached. This was arguably the first domestic vacuum-cleaning device to resemble the modern vacuum cleaner.
David T. Kenney

Nine patents granted to the New Jersey inventor David T. Kenney between 1903 and 1913 established the foundation for the American vacuum cleaner industry. Membership in the Vacuum Cleaner Manufacturers' Association, formed in 1919, was limited to licensees under his patents.

James Murray Spangler

In 1907, James Murray Spangler, a janitor in Canton, Ohio invented an electric vacuum cleaner from a fan, a box, and a pillowcase. Crucially, in addition to suction, Spangler's design incorporated a rotating brush to loosen debris. Lacking the funds to produce his design himself, he sold the patent to W.H.Hoover.

Hoover

Spangler patented his rotating-brush design June 2nd 1908, and eventually sold the idea to his cousin's husband, W.H. Hoover. Hoover was looking for a new product to sell, as the leather goods produced by his 'Hoover Harness and Leather Goods' company were becoming obsolete, due to the invention of the automobile. In the United States, Hoover remains one of the leading manufacturers of household goods, including cleaners; and Hoover became very wealthy from the invention. Indeed, in Britain the name Hoover became synonymous with the vacuum cleaner so much so that one "hoovers" one's carpets. Initially called 'The Electric Suction Sweeper Company', their first vacuum was the 1908 'Model O', which sold for $60.

Constellation Hoover Constellation of 1960

Hoover is also notable for an unusual vacuum cleaner, the Hoover Constellation, which is a canister type but lacks wheels. Instead, the vacuum cleaner floats on its exhaust, operating as a hovercraft, although this is not true of the earliest models. They had a swivel top hose with the intention being that the user would place the unit in the center of the room, and work around the cleaner.

Introduced in 1952, they are collectible, and are easily identified by the spherical shape of the canister. They tended to be loud, had poor cleaning power, and could not float over carpets. But they remain an interesting machine; restored, they work well in homes with lots of hardwood floors.

The Constellations were changed and updated over the years until discontinued in 1975. These Constellations route all of the exhaust under the vacuum using a different airfoil. The updated design is quiet even by modern standards, particularly on carpet as it muffles the sound. These models float on carpet or bare floor - although on hard flooring, the exhaust air tends to scatter any fluff or debris around.

Hoover has now re-released an updated version of this later model Constellation in the US (model # S3341 in Pearl White and # S3345 in stainless steel). Changes include a HEPA filtration bag, a 12 amp motor, a suction turbine powered rotating brush floor head, and a redesigned version of the handle, which tended to break.

This same model was marketed in the UK under the Maytag brand, with the model being the Satellite. Same machine, different badges, owing to licensing restrictions.

The 5.2 amp motor on older US units provides respectable suction but they all lack a motorized brush head. Therefore they generally work better on hard floors or short pile rugs. Old units take Hoover type J paper bags but the slightly smaller type S allergen filtration bags can be easily trimmed to fit the retaining notches on the old vacuums. Replacement motors are still available from Hoover US for some models.

Hoover made another hovering vacuum cleaner model called the Celebrity in 1973. It has a flattened "flying saucer" shape. Hoover added wheels to it make it a conventional canister model after a brief run as a hovering vacuum.
